DENVER (KDVR) — Two children from Colorado are safe after their mother, who does not have custody of them and has since been arrested, allegedly abducted them and took them to Texas, prompting a statewide Amber Alert.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday responded to a parental abduction call, where the guardian of a 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl reported their mother, Magali Mejia Sanchez, who has restricted contact with the children, took them, according to a sheriff’s office press release.
Mejia Sanchez also allegedly told the children’s guardian she was going to take them to Mexico.
The sheriff’s office started investigating and found information that they were in Texas, leading to the Amber Alert there. According to the Amber Alert, they were last seen in Justiceburg, a town outside Lubbock in the western part of the state.
At about 2 a.m., police in Fredericksburg, which is about 260 miles from Justiceburg near San Antonio, found the children and arrested Mejia Sanchez, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials are working to reunite the children with their guardian.
Mejia Sanchez is facing a charge of violation of a protection order.
