DENVER (KDVR) — Four Denver Public Library branches set to receive bond-funded upgrades will be temporarily closed by the end of the year, in preparation for the renovations.
DPL said Friday that the branches — including the Hampden Branch Library, Ross-Broadway Branch Library, Eugene Field Branch Library and Ross-University Hills Branch Library — are being “taken offline” by the end of the year, partially as a cost-saving measure in response to budget reductions.
“We know the public relies on us for services, and we are exploring many creative ways to bring library service to the impacted neighborhoods during this time,” said Nicolle Davies, city librarian and executive director, in a statement. “We appreciate the flexibility of our library staff at locations that will be undergoing bond renovations in the coming year.”
DPL noted all four of the branches were already slated to temporarily close by mid next year due to the bond renovations, with closures of the Hampden Branch Library and Ross-Broadway Branch Library already planned for 2025.
The timelines for the Eugene Field Branch Library and Ross-University Hill Branch Library were “slightly moved up,” however, according to DPL, which said those branches would have been taken offline by June 2026.
DPL said the planned renovations at the Hampden Branch Library are being funded through the 2022 RISE Denver Bond, while upgrades at the other three library branches are being paid for by the 2017 Elevate Denver Bond.
The last day of public service at the branches, according to DPL, will be:
- Hampden Branch Library – Saturday, Oct. 4
- Ross-Broadway Branch Library – Saturday, Nov. 1
- Eugene Field Branch Library – Wednesday, Nov. 26
- Ross-University Hills Branch Library – Saturday, Dec. 20
The Virginia Village Branch Library and Ross-Cherry Creek Branch Library will be moving to seven-day-a-week service amid the closures, according to DPL, which said Central Library will also expand to a seven-day-a-week schedule later this year.
DPL said all branch staff and operational support staff at the temporarily closed branches will be redeployed to other locations within the DPL system.
