Arapahoe Basin opened for ski season on Sunday morning

DENVER (KDVR) — Skiers and snowboarders can now take to the mountains of Arapahoe Basin Ski Area following the opening of the area for the ski season, according to a press release from Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.

Typically, the first in North America to open for the season, Arapahoe Basin was just edged out by Keystone Resort this year, making it the first time since 2019 that Arapahoe Basin hasn’t been the first to open for ski season.

It’s not an official competition, but it can indicate that the staff were on top of things and successful in the meticulous preparations necessary to have an early opening day.

Snow obviously needs cold temperatures so it does not melt, but the first natural snow is not the only way to get things going for a ski area. With the use of snow guns, a snowy canvas can be painted on the hillside.

“Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin Ski Area ushered in the Colorado Ski Country USA 2025–26 ski season this morning, as the Black Mountain Express chairlift roared to life and welcomed skiers and riders to the slopes. Crisp alpine air set the tone for another classic Colorado opening, with eager early risers gathering at the base to claim first chair,” said a spokesperson for Arapahoe Basin, in a media release.

Regardless of who opens first, Colorado skiers are eager to get back on the slopes and have decided to kick off the season with some runs in costumes, with festivities kicking off in the early morning, with “carpark cuisine,” said Arapahoe Basin.
