AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — In the coming weeks, the Aurora City Council plans to take a closer look at the growing problem of teenagers riding dirt bikes on city streets.
A spokesperson for the Aurora Police Department says the issue has become a “large problem” for officers — something also shared by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office last week when a teenager was injured in a crash. The teen was riding a dirt bike on county roads and hit a pickup truck, leading to minor injuries.
Currently, Aurora police officers don’t give out citations; instead, they use the opportunity to educate and/or seek out the parents.
The city council will officially take up the topic on Sept. 22.
In the meantime, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office shared that e-bikes are separated by class, and that e-motorcycles and dirt bikes are not allowed on sidewalks or multi-use trails.
E-motorcycles and e-dirt bikes can reach speeds of 40 mph or more. The state’s e-bike laws can be found here, which also touch on e-scooters.
