DENVER (LDVR) — Aurora city leaders voted to let the Aurora Police Department use AI facial recognition technology through Clearwater AI. Authorities say it will keep Aurora safer, however, some are concerned about the vendor, Clearwater AI, and privacy.
The resolution was passed by a 5-2 vote on Monday night.
Official says the plan only allows officers to use the technology in certain situations, for instance, to identify a suspect. They say the tool can only be used as an “investigative lead” and not as a positive identification or probable cause for an arrest.
Earlier this year, Clearwater AI settled a class action lawsuit over allegations it violated Illinois’ privacy laws.
City leaders estimate it will cost around $171,000 to implement the software.
