Aurora family says thieves stole thousands in fishing gear, paddleboards

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — An Aurora family says their garage was burglarized early Monday, with thieves making off with thousands of dollars in fishing gear and paddleboards.

Homeowner Drew Leckman said he was asleep around 2 a.m. when he got a Ring camera security alert on his phone.

“I woke up and all I saw on my phone was a masked man at my door,” Leckman said. “I went over, opened the safe, grabbed my .38 and went to the front door. I couldn’t see anything outside — it was pitch black.”

The Ring video shows masked burglars inside Leckman’s garage. He confronted them through the camera, but says they still managed to take nearly $2,000 worth of items, including hand-carved ice fishing poles and paddleboards belonging to him and his son.

Leckman said fishing has been a major part of his family’s life.

“Fishing has been kind of a catalyst that has helped to pull my family together a lot of times,” he said. “They just took essentially all my weekend life away from me with that one quick steal.”

Leckman believes the suspects live nearby and described them as “career criminals.”

Aurora police confirmed they are investigating the case under report number 2025-161252. Detectives are reviewing evidence and urged residents to lock garages and entry points, which they say are often easy targets for thieves.

“I do have concerns that these are people who will strike again,” Leckman said. “I really do hope they are arrested.”

Aurora police said the case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at 303-627-3100.
