DENVER (KDVR) – A busy downtown Denver intersection is back open after a serious two-vehicle crash early Saturday.
The Denver Police Department posted on social media around 5:20 a.m. Saturday that two cars were involved in a crash along Speer Boulevard at 8th Avenue. Two people were taken to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries is not yet known, police said.
“We’re right next to Denver Health so they were probably able to get on scene really quick,” said neighbor Paul Johnson, who heard the crash. “Both cars are demolished, front-end demolished. Seeing them torn apart like they are, is a little unsettling. The airbags in the second car that’s further down the street, were completely exploded so it doesn’t look good.”
FOX31 crews on scene saw shattered glass, tires and a car’s engine scattered across Speer Boulevard Saturday morning. Several light and street posts were also down near Bannock Street. The intersection was closed for several hours as officers investigated, but reopened around 8:45 a.m.
“We are right off of the Cherry Creek Riverwalk and the Golden Triangle, so unfortunately we do see and hear a lot of traffic incidents here and there is a big police presence in the neighborhood,” said Johnson.
DPD said it did not know what caused the crash, including if it was a potential DUI-related crash or maybe a wrong-way driver. It’s unclear if anyone may face charges.
