LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — On Wednesday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced that it will be leading an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place north of Durango on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident began at approximately 2:40 p.m., when the Durango Emergency Communications Center received multiple 911 calls that reported a male and female involved in a physical domestic disturbance inside a moving vehicle that was leaving the city of Durango by traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 550.

A La Plata County Sheriff’s Deputy and a Durango Police Officer had located the vehicle in the 28000 block of U.S. Highway 550 and initiated a traffic stop. Based on preliminary information, which includes officer body-cam footage, the female passenger had run towards law enforcement officers for aid. The male driver advanced towards the female and the deputy, allegedly armed with an ax handle and a baseball bat.

The deputy reportedly fired his service weapon at the male. Multiple officials immediately rendered first aid to the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The female passenger, law enforcement officials and other individuals were not injured during the incident.

According to standard protocol, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation of the incident. Alongside CBI, the Southwest Regional Shoot Team, which includes law enforcement agencies from across southwest Colorado, will provide support to the investigation.

CBI will release details as they become available; however, at this time, no further information regarding the incident is known.
