DENVER (KDVR) — The recently acquired Collard Ranch State Wildlife Area is now open to public access, Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced Wednesday.
The 1,860-acre wildlife area was acquired by CPW in March 2024 for “increased hunting, angling and wildlife viewing opportunities along Tarryall Creek in Park County,” according to the agency.
Collard Ranch SWA is located around 60 miles southwest of Denver at Collard Ranch in Park County.
“With great views in South Park, the wide open valleys, abundant wildlife and meandering streams, sportspeople will certainly enjoy the opportunities that await at the Collard Ranch SWA”, said CPW Area Wildlife Manager Scott Murdoch, in a statement.
The wildlife area is only available for day use and does not allow camping. Dogs are also not permitted, according to CPW, which said access to the area will be on a first-come, first-served basis and that it is considered full “when all parking spots are occupied.”
No parking will be allowed in non-designated areas, CPW said. There are three parking lots on the property, two parking areas off County Road 34 on the east and central area of the SWA and limited additional parking off Highway U.S. 285.
Collard Ranch SWA will be open to hunting from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, while fishing will be allowed from May 1 through Sept. 30. Those who wish to hunt or fish must possess a valid SWA pass, hunting or fishing license, CPW said Wednesday.
CPW also encourages anglers to practice “selective harvest” to “help maintain a healthy fishery.”
“The Collard Ranch SWA protects incredible habitat for both terrestrial and aquatic species and provides excellent hunting and fishing opportunities to the public,” Murdoch said.
Collard Ranch SWA was purchased for $2 million as part of a partnership with Western Rivers Conservancy, according to CPW. Funding for the purchase, meanwhile, was generated through the sale of the $12.15 Habitat Stamp by Colorado hunters and anglers.
The wildlife area will be closed from Dec. 31 to April 30 to protect wintering wildlife, according to CPW.
