DENVER (KDVR) — Thousands of Coloradans raised money for breast cancer awareness during the Susan G. Komen ‘More than Pink’ Walk on Saturday.
Event organizers estimated about 7,000 Coloradans were at City Park Saturday morning in pink to show their support for survivors, families and those actively battling breast cancer.
“I lost my mom to breast cancer in 2009. If there was anything we could do to save one family from going through what our family went through, to save one person from what my mom went through, then any amount of money or time that we gave wouldn’t be in vain,” said Community Board Member Trevor Fuhrman.
City Park was chosen as a new location for the walk this year. Routes ranged from one to three miles.
“We thought this would be a more ideal location. It’s surrounded by a lot more green than concrete, so we thought this would be a better location, more family-friendly and quite frankly a better view of downtown from this far away,” said Fuhrman.
According the More than Pink Walk website, the walk is Susan G. Komen’s largest fundraising event series, evolved from the Race for the Cure in 2018. Organizers say people with breast cancer need more than just awareness, but also access to treatment, research and emotional support.
“I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, which is an aggressive form of cancer, it affects the underserved Black people a lot,” said Debra Ellis, who has been cancer-free for five years. “It is wonderful having so much support. The Denver community, the Colorado community is really supportive of the journey.”
FOX31’s Kim Posey and Talya Cunningham were the emcees of the event, one of the largest in the Rocky Mountain region. If you would like to donate, click here.
