Colorado law enforcement going to be out in full force for Labor Day weekend

GOLDEN, Colo. (KDVR) — This upcoming Labor Day weekend, if you are celebrating, flashing lights could be your view in your rearview mirror.

“You’re not only risking your life, you’re risking the life of your passengers, you’re risking- you’re risking the life of everybody around you and at the end of the day, we have zero tolerance for that. We catch you, you’re gonna go to jail that night,” Colorado State Patrol Trooper Ivan Alvarado said.

“Our focus is going to be to pull over those cars that are putting everybody else in danger. If you’re driving impaired, we’re going to arrest you. If you’re driving carelessly, we’re going to give you a ticket,” Alvarado said.

Alvarado says to make a plan. Designate a driver in your group, call a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft, or if you are close, walk home. Take the steps necessary ahead of time to make sure you are not getting behind the wheel.

“Whenever I think about these upcoming holiday weekends, especially, I think about all of those families who I know were those families that received those, the worst phone call of their lives on a holiday weekend,” said Rebecca Green, state executive director for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
And speed kills, 237 people have been killed as a result of speeding this year alone, and 1274 over the last five years. It is not just those in cars, pedestrian and cyclist deaths have skyrocketed since 2016, with 34% more deaths.

“It’s one person’s quick decision to drive impaired that shifts the entire direction of a family and so when we think about Labor Day, this should be a celebration and not impending devastation on a family, right?” Green asked.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is teaming up with Uber with a special code for the weekend. Use code safeldco25 for a discount on your ride home.
