Colorado sees first skier-caused avalanche of the season

DENVER (KDVR) — Skiing or snowboarding is a great time, but unlike many other sports, Mother Nature always has to be taken into consideration — humanity has yet to find a baseball player who can trigger a natural disaster with the swing of a bat, but the same can’t be said for every skier.

As the snow returns to the peaks in Colorado, skiers have taken to the mountains to shred.

Some ski areas haven’t even opened for the ski season, and the first skier-triggered avalanche has already occurred, according to a post on X from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center on Saturday evening.

The avalanche was set in motion on Friday near Treasury Mountain in Crested Butte.

“This setup reminds us that even small early-season slides can happen on steep slopes where you find ~10 inches or more of consistent snow,” said the Colorado Avalanche Information Center in the post.

There were no reported injuries.
