Demolition accident causes traffic impacts in downtown Denver

DENVER (KDVR) — The building on the corner of Lincoln Street and 7th Avenue in Denver has stood for more than 50 years, but it won’t be standing much longer.

Piece by piece, it’s coming down, though some of those pieces didn’t land where they were supposed to on Monday.

“That’s just crazy to see the Denver institution. It’s been there forever. It’s also an ugly, brutalist building. So it’s kind of due to a degree,” Denver resident Eric Mandel said.

A day of major demolition on the former Denver 7 building didn’t exactly go off without a hitch. A piece of the wall near the back of the building came down on a construction vehicle and narrowly missed traffic along 7th Street. This shut down the eastbound lanes for the entire afternoon.

Something people like Eric Mandel, who passes the building every day, noticed.

“I know it is a desolate intersection to say the least, so it would be great to see some livelihood, maybe something commercial, but yeah, everything changes and it’s due,” Mandel said.

Others say they wanted to see the building saved, used for something other than another apartment building in an area that seems to constantly be changing.

“A lot of things change around here when there’s been such a, such a, like, there was a feel of, like, the neighborhood. And, like, a lot of, like, a lot of that’s gone. And i was really hopeful that this building would stay and they would be able to do something else with it. But i guess that’s not happening,” Denver resident Tim Black said.

FOX31 called the company responsible for the demolition multiple times for a statement or even more information about what happened. Nobody picked up or called us back.
