DENVER (KDVR) — A Denver business is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday to help support the family of Matthew Silverstone, an 18-year-old student who was shot on Sept. 10 during the Evergreen High School shooting.
Silverstone’s family, alongside the 14-year-old boy who was also shot during the incident, have been asking for privacy during this time. However, the Silverstones have been more apt to share pictures, memories and more about who Matthew is with the community.
The Cow Lot, a family-owned business in Denver, is hosting a fundraiser from midnight to midnight on Saturday. The company sells western hats and accessories and will be donating 25% of sales to the Silverstone family.
Karen Orms is one of the shop’s co-owners, and she spoke with FOX31’s Talya Cunningham about the shooting, which happened 20 minutes from her backyard. Orms said she wants to stand up for her community, and this felt like one way to do so.
Orms also has a personal connection to Matthew — her best friend works with Matthew’s mother, who has not left his hospital bedside since the shooting 15 days ago.
Orms also said that Matthew saved lives by trying to warn other students about the shooter, calling him a hero.
“He is a magical, warm-hearted, sweet young man and he deserves all of our care,” Orms said. “It just felt like the right thing to do. We’re big on community. We’re big on supporting each other. It just felt right. I made a donation to the GoFundMe and I felt like, gosh, I need to do more.”
Orms is doing all she can to help and is calling for the community to help out this weekend.
She says that Matthew’s mother is a single mom with other children and that she’s not working right now, opting instead to stay next to her son in the hospital.
