Denver could break this heat record on Thursday

DENVER (KDVR) — It’s going to be hot in Denver on Thursday with temperatures nearing 100 degrees and inching toward record-breaking heat.

Thursday is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day for the hot temperatures, which have already closed some schools and set early releases for others in the area. With an expected high of 98 degrees, Denver could hit a new daily high.

Denver has broken heat records that have been held for more than 50 years, but the hottest Aug. 21 in history was only set in 2023, when temperatures reached 99 degrees. However, that may change on Thursday.

On Thursday, Aug. 21, highs will climb to the upper 90s, with the PinPoint Weather team expecting temperatures to hit a high of 98 degrees, just one degree away from tying the daily record.

It’s going to be hot on Thursday, but Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels said it likely won’t reach over 100 degrees. Michels said that Denver could break the record, but he expects temperatures to only reach the middle 90s in the southern metro area.

Denver isn’t the only one experiencing high temperatures. Here’s what the rest of the area looks like on Thursday:

These temperatures have affected schools in the area, many without AC. On Wednesday night, schools like Brown and Park Hill Elementary announced closures for the day, while other places, like Johnson Elementary, are planning for an early release.

While it’s going to be hot, temperatures will cool down with clouds and wind moving in Thursday night, dipping into the mid-60s. Temperatures will drop into the 80s and even the upper 70s through the weekend.
