DENVER (KDVR) — Denver Public Schools is hosting an annual training for the crossing guards in its district on Monday, Sept. 22.
The training is being conducted by DPS Department of Climate and Safety, which employs more than 50 crossing guards in total, the school district said Friday.
DPS said the crossing guards “play an essential role” in “ensuring safety” during busy school drop off and pick up times, while regularly enduring “dangerous and stressful conditions.”
“The annual training will provide crossing guards with a safe environment to practice communication and de-escalation strategies while experiencing the types of tense, real-world encounters they may face every day,” DPS said in a release.
DPS said crossing guards regulary have to deal with cars speeding through crosswalks and drivers honking their horns, yelling or ignoring traffic laws.
“This training underscores DPS’s commitment to ensuring crossing guards are not only prepared to protect students, but also supported in handling the mental and emotional stress that comes with keeping families safe at arrival and dismissal,” the school district said.
