Drone helps find wanted people hiding in crawl space of a Buena Vista home

DENVER (KDVR) — Authorities were able to find two wanted people hiding in a crawl space after sending a drone into a Buena Vista home.

On Tuesday, the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office showed a way it’s using the changing technology after posting a video of a drone helping find “two wanted parties” on social media.

The video, shown in the player above, captures the tactical team using a drone to see inside a crawl space, which is dark and dusty. The drone appears to take about two minutes before locating the two suspects against a wall.

The sheriff’s office said that using a drone helps limit injuries to officers and suspects, and instead of using gas to get the wanted people outside of the crawl space or risking injuries by sending an officer down, the drone was able to do the work.

With the help of the Salida Police Department and the Buena Vista Police, the sheriff’s office said they were able to end this interaction peacefully without any injuries.

These aren’t the only authorities using drones in recent operations.

The Lakewood Police Department is now using the technology to respond to some calls for service. Meanwhile, in August, the Loveland Police Department used a drone to find a man who allegedly committed a robbery and evaded police.

Drones are starting to be implemented in several police stations across Colorado, and many authorities have already reported the effectiveness of using the technology.
