Evacuations lifted after carbon dioxide spill in Fort Collins

DENVER (KDVR) — A hazmat team and other crews were in Fort Collins cleaning up a carbon dioxide spill on Friday morning.

Just before 11 a.m., the Poudre Fire Authority said its hazmat team and other crews were called to 250 N. Mason St. in Severence, where the Fort Collins Transportation building sits, for a carbon dioxide spill.

The Downtown Transit Center and surrounding buildings had been evacuated as the authority said crews monitored the air quality and cleaned up the spill by breaking off large chunks of frozen carbon dioxide so it could evaporate.

“Firefighters broke the large chunks of frozen carbon dioxide (essentially dry ice) into small pieces so it can quickly evaporate,” the authority said.

The spill appeared to be coming from a vehicle, and the authority said it would “escort the carrier’s vehicle back to their facility.”

Around 11:15 a.m., the agency announced that the evacuations had been lifted, and the hazmat team confirmed that the levels had returned to normal after being slightly elevated, but remained within safe limits.

No injuries were reported.
