Ex-Colorado deputy allegedly 'on the run' for child sex abuse material found in Mexico

DENVER (KDVR) — A former San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office deputy facing child sex abuse charges was apprehended by Mexican authorities in a border town, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation announced Friday.

Jesus Damian Nieblas, 28, was employed as a deputy in San Miguel County until he resigned in June. Nieblas was reported to be “on the run from” dozens of charges related to alleged child sex abuse material found in his Norwood home and vehicle.

On Friday, CBI reported that Nieblas had fled to Mexico on or about July 10 after his home and vehicle were subject to a search warrant by CBI as part of the active investigation. Evidence that CBI recovered during the search warrant led to the issuance of a probable cause arrest warrant, the agency said.

CBI says Nieblas is facing charges of:

  • One count of sexual exploitation of a child, a class 3 felony
  • 11 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, class 4 felonies
  • 16 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, class 5 felonies
  • 27 counts of failure to report child abuse or neglect, class 2 misdemeanors

After Nieblas was apprehended by Mexican authorities in the border town of Agua Prieta, Mexico, he was transferred into the U.S. Marshals’ custody at the border checkpoint near Douglas, Arizona.

The news of his arrest was reported to Colorado law enforcement on Sept. 29, but CBI said legal processes required the information not to be released until Oct. 3.

Nieblas was being held at the Cochise County Jail in Bisbee, Arizona, as of Friday night. He is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
