DENVER (KDVR) — An Aurora police sergeant was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation Task Force, the police department shared Wednesday.
Aurora Police Department Sergeant Aaron Bunch was taken into custody on state charges related to the online sexual exploitation of a child. The department said the charges involve the electronic exchange of child exploitation material via the internet.
On Wednesday, Bunch was booked into the Denver Detention Center. The case will be prosecuted by the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
Bunch was hired by the Aurora Police Department in 2005. He was working as a school resource officer supervisor as of Wednesday, and was placed on unpaid administrative leave immediately after the agency learned of his arrest, according to the police department press release.
The Aurora Police Department initiated an internal administrative investigation to address policy and conduct violations; the FBI will handle the criminal investigation.
The police department said that as of Wednesday, it had no evidence to show any students or children within Aurora Public Schools, the Cherry Creek School District or the Aurora community were victimized or impacted.
“This is a sad and angering day for the Aurora Police Department and the community we serve,” Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain said in a release. “The allegations against this individual are disturbing and completely contrary to the values and mission of this department. This person has brought shame and disgrace to the badge and to an honorable profession.
“Such behavior undermines the trust and legitimacy that our officers work hard to earn every day,” Chamberlain added. “I want to make it absolutely clear; these actions will never be tolerated. This case will be investigated thoroughly, and the individual will be held accountable through both the criminal justice system and our internal processes.”
FOX31 is working to learn more about the nature of the charges against Bunch and is also reaching out to the impacted school districts for comment. As information is gathered, this article will be updated.
