Fire crews brave hail, lightning storm to battle attic fire at care facility

DENVER (KDVR) — Firefighters are known to be ready rain or shine to serve their communities, but Poudre Fire Authority crews on Tuesday also braved hail and lightning to put out a fire at a memory care facility.

The fire was in the attic of a facility in the 5050 block of South Lemay Avenue in Fort Collins, and over 30 people were evacuated during the fire, the Poudre Fire Authority said in a Facebook post.

Responding crews had to walk over freshly fallen piles of hail to enter the building and search for the origin of the smoke seen from the roof. They found the fire in the attic and confirmed it did not spread into the walls or ceiling of the building.

“This facility has a complex roof line and we were dealing with a continuing lightning storm,” said the incident commander. “We had to pull people off because of the storm and then reorient to search from the inside.”

Crews found and eventually extinguished a small fire in the peak of the facility’s attic, with most damage to the upper and exterior area of the roof.

Facility staff evaluated residents to make sure everyone was okay and that no one had inhaled smoke, and no one reported any injuries.

The fire’s cause is still being investigated.
