DENVER (KDVR) — Denver’s Halloween weekend celebration continued Sunday, causing law enforcement to send a message of caution ahead of the release of reports showing how many DUI arrests were made.
Nationwide, 44% of arrests on Halloween weekend typically involve drunk drivers.
“We definitely see the increase of DUI numbers this long weekend. We see, unfortunately, the crashes go up,” Colorado State Patrol spokesperson Ivan Alvarado told FOX31.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office posted a warning on X stating extra DUI enforcement is active on area roadways, noting holiday weekends tend to have one of the highest DUI rates.
Many are already planning parties and events to kick off the end-of-year holiday season. Law enforcement encourages drivers to make plans now to keep their holidays safe, including appointing a designated sober driver, using rideshare services or taxis.
“You get into a crash in which you hurt somebody, you kill somebody, well, you’re going to make this great long weekend into the reason you’re probably going to spend the rest of your life in prison,” said Alvarado.
The safety warnings include driving while using marijuana or drugs.
