Heated Greeley City Council meeting leads to 'physical altercation,' 71-year-old woman cited

GREELEY, Colo. (KDVR) — A Greeley City Council meeting got heated earlier this week and ended with a police report being filed.

The meeting at the City Center South building drew a sizeable crowd for public comment on the Catalyst & Cascadia Greeley West project. Greeley Police officers were also present in the council chambers.

The two-part project is going to be an entertainment district that is going to cost about $832 million, which will go towards a professional sports arena, a year-round indoor waterpark and a privately-owned residential and commercial area called Cascadia.

During public comment, rules were set to refrain from applause or booing; however, some speakers were interrupted by people yelling from the crowd. “We’re tired of it,” one woman yelled, as the captain of the Colorado Eagles hockey team was speaking in favor of the project.

Moderators stepped in and said, “Come on, folks, we were doing so well.”

Many who spoke were concerned that the city council had approved the project as an ordinance rather than putting it to a public vote, since it would use taxpayer dollars. Others believed it would bring jobs and tourism to Northern Colorado and benefit youth hockey.

Members of school communities and youth hockey teams were also present at the meeting.

After the public comment period, the Greeley Police Department said a “physical altercation” ensued between two women as people were leaving.

Police said 71-year-old Mary Monahan was cited for harassment and released on the scene. The victim was identified as a 40-year-old woman.

The investigation is ongoing, and any additional witnesses who have not already been interviewed by police are encouraged to contact Officer Paul Shannon at [email protected].
