DENVER (KDVR) — Interstate 70 reopened after snow caused closures on parts of the roadway from Silverthorne to the Eisenhower Tunnel on Monday morning.
The Colorado Department of Transportation closed I-70 between Exit 205: U.S. 6; CO 9; Silverthorne and Exit 216: US 6; Loveland Pass for safety conditions on Monday morning, but reopened the roadway just before 8 a.m.
The National Weather Service said this snow on I-70 will make for some slick travel near the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass until about 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. when conditions improve.
COtrip, a traveler information map, said there were scattered showers starting at Genessee Mountain around 7 a.m. Showers went on west, through Idaho Springs, until Georgetown, where it started to turn into snow. From Silver Plume to Silverthorne, snow was captured blanketing the roadway.
Here’s what it looks like Monday morning:
Snow hasn’t hit the Denver metro just yet, but in the mountains, snow has fallen several times. In late September, light snow was spotted covering some mountain peaks and on Front Range roadways. Flakes are getting closer and closer to the foothills and the Denver metro. While there’s snow along I-70, Denver will remain dry on Monday.
The city just saw its first freeze of the season over the weekend, but it hasn’t seen snow just yet. There’s a freeze warning in Denver on Monday, but the Pinpoint Weather team doesn’t expect snow in the area until November this year.
