DENVER (KDVR) — The renowned Ice Castles are coming back to Colorado again this winter, but this time, one of the famous frozen attractions will be in a different location.
The Ice Castles is a winter wonderland known for its massive structures with tunnels, archways, towers, slides and fountains — all made out of ice. There have been only a handful of locations across the nation, with one of them in Cripple Creek. Last year, the attraction added a second Colorado location in Eagle.
While the frozen fortress will be coming back to Cripple Creek for another year, the Ice Castles announced that it would be returning to Silverthorne for the first time since 2011.
The Ice Castles started with Brent Christensen, the founder, and a project for his kids in his backyard. Eventually, it became an iconic attraction, which opened up a location in Silverthorne in 2011 for the first year as commercial Ice Castles, an Ice Castle spokesperson said.
The Ice Castles have been in several Colorado locations since, but for the 15th anniversary, it’s partnering with Outlets at Silverthorne and coming back to Summit County once again.
“We’re so excited to return to Silverthorne, where our first commercial Ice Castles came to life. Celebrating 15 years of magic here feels like coming full circle. We are grateful for the continued support of the Town of Silverthorne and Outlets at Silverthorne, whose partnership makes it possible to share the magic again,” said Christensen.
Soon, around 20 ice artisans will start building the castles by growing, harvesting and hand-placing icicles. By late October, the team will be working in Cripple Creek and at the Outlets at Silverthorne.
Depending on the weather, the attraction will open in late December, where visitors can experience the frozen wonderland in the day and the fortress of color-changing, glowing walls by night.
