DENVER (KDVR) — The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office said it was “grateful” an Idaho Springs police officer was able to make it safely home after his vehicle was hit by a suspected drunk driver while he was dealing with alleged racers on Interstate 70.
The incident happened at about 5 a.m. Thursday morning on I-70 west of the St. Mary’s exit, according to the sheriff’s office, which had choice words for the suspects involved.
“They say ‘Stupid Is as Stupid Does’ and from this morning’s series of events, it seems accurate,” the sheriff’s office said to start the Facebook post announcing the incident.
Idaho Springs police made the initial stop just before 5 a.m. on several vehicles racing at speeds over 100 mph on the interstate.
While the officer was out of his vehicle “dealing with those idiots, Super Stupid was driving drunk and crashed into ISPD’s patrol vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said.
The officer was not injured since he was out of hie vehicle at the time of the crash.
The sheriff’s office said the suspected drunk driver “admitted it” at the scene and is “sleeping it off in the cozy confines of the Clear Creek County jail.”
“This morning’s incident was entirely preventable: from high speed racing to smashing a police car,” the sheriff’s office said. “We are grateful the officer was able to go home instead of the hospital.”
