LITTLETON, Colo. (KDVR) — A break-in at the old Elvis Cinema in Littleton is being tied to what investigators call a growing “urban explorer” trend — where groups of young adults or teens illegally enter vacant buildings for the thrill of exploring.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office released surveillance video showing several people forcing their way through the front doors of the shuttered theater, which is currently leased by a local church. Deputies say nothing was stolen, but the doors and interior were damaged.
“Most of these kids aren’t out here to make this the crime of the century, but we do take it seriously,” said Investigator Jon Zinanti with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
“The juice isn’t worth the squeeze — is it worth a couple likes on TikTok or Instagram to go commit a felony and get busted for it?”
Zinanti says the incidents are happening across the Denver metro area and beyond — often fueled by social-media challenges where people post videos from inside off-limits buildings.
The sheriff’s office is asking for help identifying the people in the surveillance footage.
