DENVER (KDVR) — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on Friday released new information regarding last month’s shooting at Evergreen High School.
The sheriff’s office, in a press release, provided a timeline that included the movements of the 16-year-old shooter and the response times from school staff, dispatch and law enforcement to the Sept. 10 shooting. Two students were shot and the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“We want to give you the complete picture from that day, and we will as soon as we can. Meanwhile, we can now share a few pieces of information that should help put some of the rumors to rest,” said the sheriff’s office.
Timeline of emergency response
According to the sheriff’s office, below is a timeline of emergency response, which was based on records from Jeffcom 911 and school security footage:
- 12:21:14 p.m.: First shot fired inside the school
- 12:21:56 p.m.: Lockdown initiated by school staff
- 12:22:15 p.m.: First call came in to 911 and the call-taker gathered information.
- 12:22:59 p.m.: Call transferred into a queue on a computer for dispatchers to then
dispatch (Deputies can also see that queue. Based on the nature of the call, the sheriff’s office’s first deputy began heading toward the school immediately (12:23:00 p.m.), before it was officially dispatched.) - 12:23:17 p.m.: Call opened and read by dispatcher
- 12:24:01 p.m.: Call toned and aired to patrol
- 12:24:09 p.m.: First responding unit was officially dispatched
- 12:24:26 p.m.: Another deputy self-deployed toward the school
- 12:27:22 p.m.: First unit on scene (this is a 3-minute response time – sheriff’s office said it originally stated 2.5 minutes)
- 12:30:29 p.m.: Deputy confronts gunman at gunpoint
Timeline of ‘shooter’s movements’
According to the sheriff’s office, the following is the provided timeline of the “shooter’s movements,” which was based on the high school’s surveillance video.
- 12:21:14 p.m.: The shooter’s first shot inside the school
- 12:21:26 p.m.: The shooter’s first shot at an individual
- 12:21:40 p.m.: The first victim was shot
- 12:23:30 p.m.: The shooter exits the building
- 12:23:30 p.m. – 12:26:21 p.m.: The shooter looks for people and then tries to get back into the school through several doors
- 12:27:21 p.m.: The shooter walks and runs across the track, moving northeast and then gets out of the camera view
- 12:30:29 p.m.: Gunman at gunpoint confronted by a deputy
- 12:31:37 p.m.: Life-saving measures started by deputies on the second victim
- 12:33:24 p.m.: Law enforcement reports the shooter died of a self-inflicted wound
The sheriff’s office also noted the shooter “fired several rounds” at individuals he encountered and reloaded the gun “several times” as he moved throughout the school.
Matthew Silverstone, the 18-year-old student shot, is still in the hospital. The 14-year-old who was shot was discharged from the hospital on Sept. 30.
