Jefferson County mom says school bus dropped children at wrong stop

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — A Jefferson County mother says her three young children were dropped off at the wrong bus stop — blocks from their home — with no parent there to meet them.

Patience Rivas told FOX31 her kindergartener, first grader and third grader were left about seven blocks away instead of their usual stop just one block from home. She said the bus driver refused to help, leaving her children to find their own way back.

“They were missing for over an hour,” Rivas said. “Honestly, that was probably the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced. You trust a bus driver with the care of your child, and for them to just be let off at the wrong spot with no parent — it was shocking.”

Rivas said she called the bus depot several times for answers and eventually contacted police. She said it was lucky her oldest child knew the way home.

Jeffco Public Schools confirmed the incident, saying street construction along the route caused confusion and led some students to get off one stop early. In a statement, the district said:

“Jeffco’s transportation team is working closely with the impacted families to ensure they arrive safely at their designated stop in the future.”

Rivas said the following day, an administrator rode the bus route to ensure children got off at the correct stops. Still, she wants longer-term answers from the district about how this happened and what is being done to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
