K-9s, drones, search teams find missing mother and son reported missing near Echo Lake

DENVER (KDVR) — Teams searched the mountains of Clear Creek County for a pair of hikers, a mother and son, who were expected back on Sunday, and successfully located them within an hour.

According to the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, teams were out in the field as of about 6:30 p.m. Monday to search for the duo, who were both expected to return from Echo Lake on Sunday afternoon or evening. By 7:15 p.m., the two missing hikers were located at Evans Ranch.

In a later update, the sheriff’s office said the pair “showed up safe” at the ranch on Upper Bear Creek Road just after 7 p.m.

While crews were in the field, snow began falling, as did the temperature. Overnight temperatures in Colorado’s high country could fall to the mid-teens overnight Monday, according to the FOX31 Pinpoint Weather Team.

Echo Lake is located along the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Drive, which has been closed for the season.

“Your positive thoughts for the missing hikers and rescue teams are appreciated,” the sheriff’s office stated on Facebook.

The sheriff’s office said that the mother is 60 years old and is about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds. She is likely wearing a purple ski coat with blue jeans and tennis shoes.

The son is described as being 25 years old, standing about 6 feet, 1 inch and weighing about 200 pounds. He was wearing a brown jacket with a white collar, blue jeans and tennis shoes.

Anyone who sees the mother, son or both is asked to call 911.

As of Monday night, there were “dozens” of searchers from the Alpine Rescue Team and Douglas County Search and Rescue, as well as multiple canines from the Front Range Rescue Dogs and search teams. Drones are also being used in the search.

Denver Parks and Rec and the Clear Creek Fire Authority are also assisting with the incident.
