DENVER (KDVR) — Now is the time to start blowing out your sprinklers before the first hard freeze of the winter season.
Mid-October is the perfect time to winterize your landscaping and irrigation systems, according to landscaping experts.
“This is Colorado. We don’t really know when the temperature is just going to drop all of the sudden,” said Manuel Granillo, an employee at My Sons Landscaping.
Granillo is part of the team at My Sons Landscaping. He says customers are trying to get landscaping jobs like flagstone and masonry done while the weather is still warm.
However, Granillo said people should really be focusing on their sprinklers.
“I think people are still kind of holding off but I feel like in the end of this week or next week we’re going to start getting a bunch of calls for the job,” Granillo said.
Sprinkler systems are vulnerable during freezing temperatures due to their shallow depth in the ground. A blowout uses a compressor to flush all of the water out of the system with air.
According to My Sons Landscaping’s irrigation expert, Jesus Monares, timing is everything when it comes to scheduling a sprinkler blowout service. If homeowners wait too long, they risk a mess and a big repair bill.
“If you don’t blow out your sprinklers it could freeze up, the lines could break. You could have a problem out here, but also inside your house in the basement,” Granillo said, who was translating for Monares.
Monares says now that it’s the middle of October, there is no such thing as being too early. Hand-watering is always an option for lawns and plants that still need moisture.
He also cautions homeowners against do-it-yourself methods.
“It’s really important to call an expert to take care of it because if you go ahead and try to do it yourself you might not do it correctly,” Granillo said, based on information from Monares. “You’re going to run into all these other issues that are going to be a lot worse. Just call a professional to come and do the job.”
