Longmont man arrested for sexual exploitation of a child

DENVER (KDVR) — A Longmont man accused of sexual exploitation of a child turned himself in on Sept. 14, according to a press release from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday morning.

The man, identified as 34-year-old Tad Alan McCartney, had a warrant out for five counts of sexual exploitation of a child relating to possession of child sex abuse material depicting a child under the age of 12 years.

McCartney came under suspicion after the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received information from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about the distribution of the explicit images.

An investigation discovered that the suspect was located in the Boulder County area. A tip was sent to the Boulder County Digital Forensics Lab, which started a further investigation into the matter.

Through a series of court orders on several electronic service providers, an investigator identified McCartney as a potential suspect.

A search warrant was acquired for his home in the 800 block of Hilltop Street in Longmont.

Investigators and Longmont SWAT served the warrant and confiscated some electronic devices, which were further investigated, resulting in probable cause to obtain an arrest warrant for McCartney.

After turning himself in to the Boulder County Jail, he faces charges, including:

  • Five counts of felony exploitation of a child — possession of images

“Since the Boulder County Digital Forensics Lab started working these investigations, three things have been made clear. First, there are individuals distributing and using child sexual abuse material in every community; so, we are fortunate to have this outstanding team pursuing these cases in Boulder County. Second, these cases involve actual victims because of what the videos depict. Finally, in this jurisdiction, the investigators and prosecutors will work hard to search out offenders, protect victims, and fight for justice,” District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated in the press release.

On Sept. 15, McCartney was released from jail on a $5,000 bond under conditions that prohibit contact with anyone under the age of 18, no use of internet devices, no use of social media and he cannot leave the state.
