Man found guilty in 2 Denver bank robberies, high-speed chase

DENVER (KDVR) — A 45-year-old man was found guilty by a federal jury in Denver on two counts of bank robbery stemming from incidents in September 2023.

Simon Meza, 45, of Denver, was convicted of two counts of bank robbery, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado. He had previously pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition in the same matter.

Prosecutors say that Meza went into the Huntington Bank on East Green Valley Ranch Boulevard in Denver on Sept. 20, 2023, and demanded money from the teller. Once provided, he took the cash and fled.

Eight days later, Mesa robbed the PNC Bank on West 32nd Avenue in Denver through the same method: Demanding cash from the teller. He took the money, which had a hidden GPS tracker, and fled.

Law enforcement tracked the GPS to a rented truck that was traveling near the bank.

The Denver Police Department tried to arrest Meza in the truck, but Meza led officers on a high-speed chase that ended with a four-car crash at 44th Avenue and Harlan Street in Wheat Ridge. There, Meza fled the vehicle and was chased and arrested by Denver police officers.

Officers reportedly found the stolen money and a loaded Glock 27 .40 caliber firearm in the truck.

Meza is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 20 and is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Office, according to court records.
