DENVER (KDVR) — A man was sentenced to 32 years in prison this week in a sexual assault case out of Denver that went cold for 18 years.
Jason Groshart, 52, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of kidnapping and one count of attempted sexual assault for the incident, which happened on March 30, 2004.
The victim told detectives that a man dressed in black with gloves and a face mask broke into her home, put her in handcuffs and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint, according to an arrest affidavit. He then made her shower and gathered the bed sheets in a trash bag, and took away that evidence. The victim was able to gather some fluid evidence of the suspect and provided her robe to detectives.
The Denver Police Department reopened the case for a follow-up investigation in March 2022. According to the affidavit, a detective met up with the victim, asked if she knew Groshart and showed her his booking photo from an arrest in Adams County for carrying a concealed weapon in October 2007. She said she did not know that person and did not consent to sexual acts with him.
In September 2022, DNA samples were collected from Groshart, and the DNA profile matched that of the suspect. He was taken into custody in Missouri in early October 2022.
“It’s hard to imagine the terror the victim felt during and after this horrific crime, and it is my hope that this significant sentence gives her some sense of comfort that Jason Groshart will likely never be able to victimize anyone else ever again,” said Denver District Attorney John Walsh in a press release.
Groshart was sentenced to 32 years in prison.
