Multiple parked vehicles damaged in Sunday evening crash in Aurora neighborhood

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — A crash on East Parklane Drive Sunday evening left three parked vehicles damaged and neighbors captured the chaotic scene on doorbell cameras.

It happened in the 12200 block of a street where the speed limit is 25 mph. Neighbors who witnessed the crash said the driver admitted to driving 50 mph Sunday evening after the Broncos game ended.

A red Pontiac slammed into three parked cars and neighbors say the damage is more than just metal. They say it’s the trust in the community that’s been hit hard.

Robin Alahuzos was in her backyard when the chaos unfolded.

“All of a sudden, I hear this big old boom crash,” she said. “The first thought in my mind was my truck.”

Her neighbor’s Ford Ranger was sideswiped. The force pushed it into her truck and another car. Three vehicles in total were damaged in seconds.

“Hit my truck, pushed it into that Mazda and shoved it up and turned my vehicle facing out in the street. My truck, my transportation. That’s all I have,” Alahuzos said.

Doorbell video Alahuzos later reviewed shows the crash, and three people, the driver and two passengers, standing around the red Pontiac.

Alahuzos says only one stuck around. When medical responders arrived, the other two casually walked away before police showed up.

“I said, ‘Why are you letting them go?’ Because he wasn’t the driver,” she said.

The driver was taken to the hospital, but walked out before officers could speak with him.

“There was beer cans in the vehicle,” said Alahuzos. “There was throw-up in the vehicle. It was nasty, completely nasty.”

One neighbor told FOX31 off-camera that when she reached out to law enforcement, the watch commander didn’t return her call. She’s concerned about the three vehicles that are not going to be covered and not having a proper police report for the car’s insurance.

“So, I’m not going to know for five to seven days if he has insurance to contact his insurance company, because my insurance company said I had to go through his,” said Alahuzos.

Police blame high call volume for the delay in response. Neighbors say a civilian crash investigator arrived 17 hours later, around 10:30 a.m. Monday. Alahuzos said that was far too late.

“People come flying. I didn’t sleep last night. I was so afraid that I was going to hear another boom where someone come flying around the corner and hit my vehicle again,” she said. “I would like to express to the police department when you get called. I mean, I realize you’re busy. You have other things to do, but when there’s a three-car, three vehicles involved and ones out in the street, you need to respond.”

Now she wants justice and her truck back.

“They should have stayed. They really should have stayed,” she said. “They should have tried to give us more information or whatever. I want my vehicle taken care of. I don’t want to have to pay for it. I was parked, minding my business, parked in front of my home.”

Neighbors say they want to start a petition to get speed bumps placed on their street to stop the speeding.

“Kids could have been. There’s kids across the street. They could have been out here playing,” Alahuzos said. “They come speeding through here all the time. Last night, when we were sitting out here waiting for the police to show up, they were speeding through. We kept saying, slow down, slow down. You know, the only thing that slowed them down was they had to slow down to go around my vehicle until 11 o’clock this morning.”

Aurora police say the crash is still under investigation. So far, no charges and no word on whether the driver had insurance.

If you recognize the people seen walking away from the vehicle, the Aurora Police Department is urging you to reach out to the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
