Musician trades clarinet for hand cuffs

DENVER (KDVR) – Aaron Botts realized his degree in music wasn’t his path, so he became a security guard in Broomfield and would interact with the local police officers.

“Through my interactions with them and them telling me all you need to do to be a police officer is to be a good person and we will teach you the rest and I said well that sounds pretty fun,” Botts said.

Being a cop trumped playing the clarinet for Botts and seventeen years later, he’s a corporal for the Denver Police Department’s DUI Unit.

“My primary job is to help officers when they come across impaired drivers and continue that investigation and when I’m not doing that I am out looking for impaired drivers myself,” Botts said.

And when he’s not doing that, he’s teaching new Denver Police recruits about DUI enforcement.

“It’s skill that every officer has to learn at the basic level but then you can go into advanced learning and advanced teaching and so I’ve taken that path much like a canine officer or drug enforcement officer or a homicide detective,” Botts said.

Botts is married, with children, and even though he’s not in the music field, he really digs his beat.

“It’s challenging. Every day is different even though it’s the same kind of work and I’m getting impaired drivers off the road and making the community safer,” Botts said.

Botts we hear what you’re playing, and congratulations.
