WESTMINSTER, Colo. (KDVR) — A 60-year-old man told police he was stabbed in the back by a stranger while fishing at McKay Lake Monday night, prompting an ongoing investigation by Westminster police.
The victim told police he had been with someone else, described as wearing a rain jacket and tan shorts, who left the area about a half hour before the stabbing.
“He was stabbed in the back by another unknown individual,” said Sam Spitz, public information officer with the Westminster Police Department. “He wasn’t able to get a good look at the suspect, but the description that he gives police is that it was a male wearing a dark colored rain jacket with dark pants.”
Police say they found blood near the shoreline and canvassed the area with a drone. They made contact with two people, but neither was connected to the case.
For people like Erin Satriano, who frequents McKay Lake, the attack feels personal.
“Absolutely shocking and really upsetting because nothing like that has ever happened before,” she said. “You come here for the exact opposite of this. For a sense of peace, beautiful view, quiet, enjoying walking or riding bikes, fishing, lots of families out here all the time.”
Satriano says she walks the loop near the lake almost every day, but now she’s changing her routine.
“Really disturbing,” she said. “Probably I’ll think twice about staying after dark going forward, which is too bad.”
She plans to be more vigilant. Police are still working to identify the attacker. They’re asking anyone who was in the area Monday night between 7 and 10 p.m. to come forward.
“Just want to assure the community we’re looking into this incident,” Spitz said. “And at this time, we have no information to believe that there’s an ongoing threat to the public, but we really just want to remind community members to be vigilant.”
The victim drove himself to the hospital and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
Westminster police say this is still an active investigation. If you were in the area Monday night and observed anything unusual, they are asking you to reach out to their tip line at 303-658-4360.
