DENVER (KDVR) — The newly reconstructed Vail Pass Rest Area off Interstate 70 in Eagle County is now open for drivers ahead of the winter season.

The facility features expanded parking, updated amenities, improved accessibility and design enhancements aimed at supporting the public and “year-round CDOT maintenance operations,” the Colorado Department of Transportation said this week.

“The new facility provides travelers with a modern, safe, and sustainable rest stop along one of Colorado’s most iconic and heavily traveled corridors,” the agency said in a release Tuesday.

CDOT said the “modernized facility” features expanded truck parking, a clearer separation of vehicles and pedestrians, safe pull-off options, ADA accessibility — including for restrooms and amenities — and a staging area for CDOT crews.

“Countless Coloradans and visitors from around the world travel I-70 to enjoy our incredible mountain communities and the breathtaking outdoors our state has to offer. This new rest area will improve that experience for travelers, giving them a safer place to take a break from their drive,” said Governor Jared Polis, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Tuesday.

CDOT said the space was also reconfigured to integrate the Ten Mile Canyon Trail into the rest area, “creating a safer and more seamless experience for both motorists and recreationalists.”

The Vail Pass Rest Area is located at Shrine Pass Road off of I-70 in Frisco. Westbound travelers must take Exit 190 toward Shrine Pass Road, turn left onto Shrine Pass Road, and keep left. Eastbound travelers must take Exit 190 toward Shrine Pass Road, turn right onto Shrine Pass Road, and keep right.

The reconstruction project began in May 2023, with $21 million in funding provided by the Joint Budget Committee, according to CDOT.
