'No threat' at Guanella Pass after sheriff's office finds man carrying rifle, wearing mask

DENVER (KDVR) — The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office said it was investigating reports of a “suspicious person” near Guanalla Pass as of Saturday morning.

The agency later shared that it had received reports of a man wearing camouflage and a mask while carrying a high-powered rifle in the area of Naylor Lake and the Silver Dollar Lake Trail, which is along Guanella Pass.

Guanella Pass is a popular peak leaf-viewing area in Clear Creek County and is expected to be busy this weekend, with additional traffic enforcement also planned for this weekend.

The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office said the suspicious person had been reported in the area of milepost 15 on Guanella Pass Road.

At about 1:10 p.m., the agency announced they had made contact with a man wearing what the sheriff’s office called “military-grade camouflage,” a balaclava and carrying a rifle. The actions are not illegal in Clear Creek County, the sheriff’s office noted.

The agency gave the man a courtesy ride back to his vehicle at the trailhead, and thanked the hikers in the area who saw something and said something.

The sheriff’s office had been asking visitors to avoid the area while the search was underway. There were no road closures ordered for the investigation.
