DENVER (KDVR) — Denver-based nonprofit WeeCycle is asking members of the community to help families struggling to obtain formula, diapers and wipes amid the nearly month-long federal government shutdown.
With SNAP benefits expected to be halted or delayed starting Nov. 1, WeeCycle said Wednesday that the demand for baby supplies is hitting record highs and that the current spike “is just the beginning.”
“We’re seeing families who’ve never asked for help before,” Morgan Seibel, executive director of WeeCycle, said in a statement. “They’re working full time, caring for their kids, and now they’re facing a federal shutdown that’s delayed the support they rely on to feed their families.”
WeeCycle, which said it operates the largest diaper bank in Colorado and distributes baby supplies across the metro area, Colorado Springs and Western Slope, is asking members of the community to donate funds, diapers, wipes and formula “to help meet the growing need.”
How WeeCycle says members of the community can help:
- Donate money online
- Purchase diapers, wipes, formula or other supplies that will be sent directly to WeeCycle through its Amazon Wish List
- Drop off supplies at donation centers
- Host a diaper drive with the help of WeeCycle
- Volunteer at a distribution event
Diaper needs in Colorado
WeeCycle said 1 in 2 families in Colorado experience diaper need and that diapers and wipes can’t be paid for with SNAP or WIC benefits, meaning already-struggling families “must stretch every dollar even further” when SNAP benefits are delayed or reduced.
“Our purpose is to make sure no child in Colorado goes without the essentials just because their parents are caught in a system that’s broken,” Seibel said.
WeeCycle said it also works with Food Bank of the Rockies, We Don’t Waste and other community food banks to provide families “one-step” access to food and essential baby supplies, but that the rising demand has left the partnerships “stretched to the limit.”
“We’re running out of formula before the line runs out of families,” Seibel said. “And that line is only getting longer.”
Families in need of assistance can find a list of upcoming WeeCycle distribution events online.
