DENVER (KDVR) — Snow is not expected for another month or so in Denver weather, but Coloradans looking forward to the ski season should get excited as some resorts reported their first snowfall of the season over the weekend.

Some resorts announced target opening dates toward the end of August, and several other ski resorts and areas have since released tentative opening dates, assuming the weather is cooperative with their plans.

Now, some opening dates may be more solidified after two Colorado ski resorts reported their first snowfall of the 2025-2026 winter season.

Some areas of the high country saw their first traces of snow during the first week of September, and over the weekend, Breckenridge Ski Resort and Keystone Resort received enough snowfall for staff members to have a snowball fight.

Vail Resorts shared photos of the fresh snowfall with the media, showing fresh powder worthy of snowball throwing, contrasting with fall foliage, which is near its peak in the high country.

Keystone Resort

Keystone Resort plans to open “as early as possible” in October, the resort said, thanks largely to its snowmaking team and the automated technology that makes snow exactly when weather conditions are ideal. The resort said this will likely be around the middle of the month.

Photos from the resort show enough snow to cover the ground with a thin layer, and enough for staff members to shovel and sweep off patio spaces.

Breckenridge Ski Resort

Breckenridge Ski Resort is planning to open around Nov. 7. Images from the resort over the weekend show snow-capped mountains, contrasting with dry ground and green grass at lower elevations and bright fall foliage all around.

Many ski areas have announced dates for when they hope to be open to skiers, but many of those dates depend on how the weather cooperates. See FOX31’s full list of tentative ski area opening dates here.
