Population growth affecting metro area intersections

DENVER (KDVR) — There have been 55 traffic deaths in Denver in 2025, according to city records. The metro area’s population growth is putting more stress on high-traffic areas across the Front Range.

“There’s just too many people in too many cars,” said one driver.

Drivers who use the multiple turn lanes at 8th Avenue and Kalamath Street told FOX31 that increased traffic can present safety hazards if drivers drift out of their lanes.

“I drive 26-foot box trucks, and it’s so hectic because it’s like three lanes merging all at once,” said a driver.

A spokesperson for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure told FOX31 one lane at 8th Avenue and Kalamath Street was recently restriped to ensure traffic was flowing correctly and safely.

The growing traffic affects pedestrians and cyclists as well.

The city has expanded the use of pedestrian countdown signs, but drivers told FOX31 that too many people are speeding or not staying in designated lanes.

“I see some tire marks on there, so I imagine somebody probably rolled up on the side,” said a driver.

The intersection of 6th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard also includes several lanes and is one of the most heavily congested in that part of the city.

DOTI told FOX31 that crews are constantly monitoring intersections and making improvements, which include working to replace signal systems that hang over the street and improving visibility.

DOTI warns that a special risk usually occurs when it’s time to turn the clocks back in November. Sun glare can be dangerous during morning and evening rush hours. Drivers should be prepared with eyewear and avoid distractions.
