DENVER (KDVR) — Rain is helping to stop a small fire reported at Rocky Mountain National Park on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the National Park Service told FOX31 in an email that RMNP fire crews responded to an area above Mills and Jewel Lakes, close to treeline, after a visitor reported seeing smoke.
Fire crews hiked to the area and found the small fire, but due to the steep and technical terrain in the area, air resources were requested, and Northern Colorado Helitack dropped buckets of water from Jewel Lake on the fire.
“It is currently raining on the fire and is forecast in the area today and tonight. Fire crews will continue to take appropriate suppression efforts,” the NPS spokesperson said around 3:45 p.m.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
The Mills Lake trail was closed during that time, but has since reopened.
