'Real live dinosaur': Weld County resident speaks of finding, capturing emu

DENVER (KDVR) — A Weld County resident who helped Animal Control Officers find and capture a loose emu speaks about the experience and meeting the bird’s owner.

On Friday, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office asked the public if anyone had possibly lost their emu, as officers believed it “may be someone’s pet.”

The sheriff’s office said that its officers received a report of a possible loose emu in the Camfield area and that a county resident agreed to assist.

FOX31 had the opportunity to interview the resident, Brian Bunn, who lives nearby to where the emu was last spotted.

“I didn’t know anybody out there had emus to be honest,” said Bunn.

Bunn said that he spotted the emu outside his Camfield property, where he and an officer captured the emu and brought it safely into a trailer.

“They’re pretty intimidating because of their claws on their feet. They’re just real live dinosaurs. They’re the last living dinosaurs,” said Bunn.

Bunn tells FOX31 that he later learned the emu’s name is Dash, whose owners were later found.

“When they found out that they had an emu missing. They were sure they thought it was going to be gone forever,” said Bunn.

Bunn notes he was glad to get Dash back home safely on Saturday, as the bird was ultimately reunited with its owners.

FOX31’s Parker Gordon contributed to this report.
