DENVER (KDVR) — A driver with outstanding felony warrants is facing several charges after a trooper watched him go over 100 mph on Interstate 76 on Friday morning.
The Colorado State Patrol said the “reckless driver” was 33-year-old Adrian W. Martinez of Thornton, who had multiple felony warrants, and now faces charges for vehicular eluding, reckless driving, driving under the influence, obstruction and resisting arrest.
Martinez was arrested after the state patrol said a trooper watched a red Cadillac SRX with no plates drive over 100 mph on eastbound I-76, near Sheridan Boulevard, around 2:52 a.m. Friday morning.
The state patrol said the trooper used a grappler, a device that shoots out netting from the front of a police car and wraps around the back wheels of the car. Once the grappler was used, the Cadillac collided with a jersey barrier and a temporary Colorado Department of Transportation VMS board, then hit a light pole near the intersection of I-76 and Sheridan Boulevard.
The two occupants were able to exit the vehicle and were taken to the hospital to be assessed for injuries. Martinez is in custody and will be transported to the Jefferson County Jail, state patrol said.
The roadway was closed for a period of time before being reopened at 4:39 a.m.
This is an active investigation. The state patrol is asking witnesses to contact CSP’s Denver Regional Communications Center at 303-239-4501 and reference case number 1A252533. Witnesses should prepare to leave their name and contact information for investigators to follow up.
