DENVER (KDVR) — It is a make-or-break moment for the Colorado Rockies.
Following a losing sweep in the three-game series against the Miami Marlins, the Rockies have only three series left this season to accumulate a single win, so they can shed the joint-worst team ever title that they would share with the 2024 Chicago White Sox.
At the moment, the Rockies sit at a record of 41-112, which currently matches the win total by the White Sox in 2024. If the Rockies don’t win, they will end up with the exact same record, and the two teams will have to learn how to share the crown of worst-ever.
They say it’s lonely at the top, but the Rockies need the White Sox to be lonely at the bottom.
For the fans who are thinking, surely they will get one win in nine games — don’t be so surprised if that fails to happen. September has been very cruel to the Rockies.
This month alone, the team has lost five series in a row and has only accumulated a pair of wins, with the team’s current record in September not offering much room for hope. The Rockies are 2-14, and man, do those tallies seem to keep ticking away in the loss column.
Remaining series
Los Angeles Angels
The first of the three remaining series starts against the lowly, last-ranked in the AL West, Los Angeles Angels, which is probably the Rockies’ best opportunity to steal a win. The Angels are on a six-game losing streak, but still hold 28 more wins than the Rockies this year.
You can never discount a classic Mike Trout throwback MVP performance, either, but injuries seem to be slowing him down. Maybe they can harness some leftover Shohei Ohtani magic that he left lying around the dugout before he joined the Los Angeles Dodgers
Seattle Mariners
In the next series, the Rockies could become a hero for the Houston Astros and a villain for the Seattle Mariners. The Astros and Mariners are locked in battle with a dead-even 84-69 record atop the AL West.
Every team has around 10 games remaining before the playoffs, and the winner of the AL West who earns an automatic playoff berth could be determined by an underdog Rockies team, which will look to poach a win off the Mariners.
San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants are likely out of a playoff spot, but a crazy winning run and things going wrong for the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres in the remaining games could give the Giants a shot in the dark at getting into the postseason.
Even if they are out of contention by the time they face the Rockies in a little over a week, the Giants would love to beat up on a division rival and will be sure to bring their best against the Rockies, or will look to release some anger, depending on how things pan out for them.
Either way, it seems like the Rockies will have a hot series in their hands.
Three series. Nine games. One win. Go Rox. No Sox.
