Security plan in place on new 16th Street in Denver

DENVER (KDVR) — The 16th Street grand reopening in Denver drew thousands ready to give the venue another chance after problems with crime and prolonged construction.

The one-mile stretch accounts for 20% of Denver’s restaurant tax base.

“It was hard on businesses. We had different access, we had the perception that downtown was closed and now it is fully open, (the) construction fences are down. It really is such a wonderful, exciting experience,” said Britt Diehl of the Downtown Denver Partnership.

Features include new underground infrastructure, remodeled bus lanes, more places to enjoy what the downtown area has to offer and family-friendly areas, including a climbing wall for kids.

“I was impressed that it’s really clean and safe,” one tourist told FOX31.

Still, many are concerned about crime in the downtown area.

“I try not to stay here too much after dark,” said one resident.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, the Denver Police Department and the District Attorney’s office will continue to enact the Downtown Safety Action Plan, which includes a new 10-officer downtown police unit, mounted horse patrol, Denver police downtown kiosk, five additional private security officers and park ranger patrols. The Downtown Denver Partnership also provides 30 security officers.
“Safety and security are the number one priority,” said Diehl.

Final attendance numbers for the grand opening are expected from the Downtown Denver Partnership this week. Economic investments totaling $570 million have been made through the Downtown Development Authority.
