Semitrailer transporting corn overturns in Custer County

(CUSTER COUNTY, Colo.) — Locals in Custer County were treated to some free corn after a semi truck hauling the produce overturned on Highway 69 north of Westcliffe.

According to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, around 2 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, deputies responded to a report of a semi truck rollover on Highway 69 just north of Reed Road, about 10 miles north of Westcliffe.

Thankfully, the semi truck’s driver was not injured; however, the truck lost a full load of ears of sweet corn.

The corn was transported to the Wet Mountain Fire Protection District in Westcliffe, where community members were invited to stop by the fire station to pick up some sweet corn that was only a little bit road-flavored but otherwise perfectly edible.

Highway 69 remained closed for nearly 13 hours, as the semi truck proved tricky to remove. The highway partially reopened just before 6 p.m., and was fully reopened just after 7 p.m.

CCSO commented on social media on Thursday evening that most of the corn had been generously handed out to the community. And while the human members of the community will undoubtedly enjoy the free corn, CCSO warned that deer also like corn, so drivers are urged to use caution in the area of the crash.
