Sheriff's Office: 3rd hunter dies in southern Colorado

DENVER (KDVR) — A third hunter has died in the San Juan National Forest Wilderness Area, according to the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said Saturday that a 54-year-old man died after the agency received “a call for help” from hunters in the South San Juan Wilderness Area.

The call came in around 11:23 p.m. on Friday in a “remote area” in the wilderness and CPR was taking place, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Conejos County Search and Rescue Team was immediately deployed. The Conejos County agency said when responders arrived it was determined the man had died.

The sheriff’s office said that the nighttime conditions were deemed unsafe for a recovery mission. On Saturday, teams and a Flight for Life helicopter returned to the area and recovered the man’s body.

It is not known at this time how the man died; however, the sheriff’s office said that the El Paso County Coroner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy.

This comes after two hunters had been reported missing in the San Juan National Forest Wilderness Area on Sept. 13. The search for the two hunters lasted for six days until their bodies were discovered. Conejos County Coroner’s Office later confirmed to FOX31 that they had died from a lightning strike.

“Sheriff Crowther reminds everyone entering the wilderness to please be cautious and well-prepared for the challenges of the backcountry. There is no threat to the hunting public or those observing the fall colors in the area,” said the sheriff’s office in the Saturday press release.
