DENVER (KDVR) — A suspect has been charged in connection with an auto theft incident that took place on Sept. 11.
The suspect was identified as Tyler J. Young, 33, a resident of Lakewood, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Last Thursday, at 4:58 p.m., the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office requested that CSP assist in a report of a stolen Ford F-150 that was found in the parking lot of a Walmart in Evergreen. Clear Creek deputies, CSP troopers and members of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident.
When law enforcement arrived, they attempted to box in the truck, which initial reports stated had two suspects in it, but at the time of the arrest, only Young was found. It is unknown if another person was in the vehicle.
The suspect rammed into the police vehicles. CSP said that it is unknown if the suspect fired a gun at the responding law enforcement.
A trooper fired his gun at the truck, which was rammed into his vehicle, and caused the door to strike him in the face, CSP reported.
Young fled from the scene and led police on a chase east on Colorado Highway 74 before merging onto eastbound Interstate 70.
The trooper who was struck in the face by the door was able to perform a PIT Maneuver on the stolen truck near Milepost 259, with the vehicle being stopped on the runaway truck ramp and Young was taken into custody, CSP said.
No law enforcement was injured from gunfire, but the trooper who was rammed was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Young faces charges, including:
- Felony second-degree assault
- Felony attempted second-degree assault
- Felony motor vehicle theft
- Felony eluding
- Reckless driving
The First Judicial Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation into shots fired by the trooper, while CSP handles the criminal investigation.
